


Gwen and Nat crawled up behind a pile of rocks, at a comfortable distance from the tower. There were no signs of life: apart from the sound of the wind, they could only hear a steady throbbing that came from the ground beneath them.
Nat pulled out the detection device he'd brought from the Institute. It had a mess of indicators that were supposed to show them if they were near the tube that contained Professor Jameson's brain. He turned the thing on.
They hunched over the device hopefully. It flickered a little, and its needle gauge quivered, but who knew what that really meant?
"Ivie said it didn't have a long range," said Nat. "I think maybe I need to get inside."
Gwen thought about that. "There are two ways. One's fast and painful. The other one might be locked."
