Doctor Temiar was warming up again, to Gwen's dismay.
"Oh, poor Professor Jameson is almost completely unable to sleep. At best he may get two hours of sleep, on a good night, but that sleep isn't continuous. He hardly ever experiences a full dream cycle. It's as though his brain... which, of course, is now all of Professor Jameson... well, it's as though his brain is rejecting the dream state. This is quite difficult for him. Our brains need to experience the dream state in order to function properly."
Gwen was trying to remember something that seemed important, but it slipped away from her. Something about... ponies? And bumblebees?
"So... " Gwen tried to focus on what the Doctor was telling her. "Professor Jameson's brain is unable to sleep normally, and you've been studying that.... are you especially interested in encanted brains, or is it just Jameson's condition that makes him a good subject?"
Doctor Temiar beamed. "You've seen it, you really have! That's wonderful! An encanted brain is an isolated human brain that is ideally suited for study. Oh, you might say that they're abnormal... but that's just prejudice on your part, I assure you."
Gwen, having said no such thing, wasn't quite sure how to defend herself.
"In fact I've assembled a small group of encanted brains who share similar disorders. They're an invaluable resource to my studies! I really feel that in a few years' time we may see a breakthrough in insomnia treatment, and it's all due to the encanted."
The Doctor smiled at her. "And it's not just me who thinks so. I've been getting calls for consultation from other researchers - not just here, you see, but from as far away as Iceland!
